Greek Tragedy returns

I write back in May 2012 about Greece’s debt problems, its political problems, the potential for these driving Greece out of the Euro. Well, three years later and that fear is back. Greece missed a repayment to the IMF and, while this is not technically a bankruptcy, it is close. Emergency talks are taking place in Europe to cobble together a bailout but many of the major European countries are playing hardball with Greece. All of this is roiling the markets. My EAFE ETF is worst hit, down over 6% in a month.

Overall my portfolio is down 2.36% since last month. There were no cash contributions. For comparison my TI Index is down 2.17%, the DOW is down 2.17% and the TSX is down 3.07%. My investments are down and performed suitably given the asset mix.

There are no winners this month. Bonds (XBB.TO) are down least, 0.97%. They are providing the protection we expect.

The major loser was my EAFE Fund (XIN.TO) down 6.26%. This is entirely due to new fears over a Greek debt default and exit from the Euro (a “grexit”!). These fears emerged in 2012 too and will hopefully be overcome. Not a good time to sell!

Overall my portfolio is down 0.20% since last month. There were no cash contributions. For comparison my TI Index is down 0.80%, the DOW is up 1.79% and the TSX is down 2.30%.

My investments have performed well against the TI and TSX indices, but not the Dow.  Winners this month include my EAFE fund (XIN.TO) up 4.53% and my speculative stocks such as McGraw-Hill (MHP) up 2.86%, Yahoo (YHOO) up 4.05%, and Constellation Software (CSU.TO) up 10.11%. Losers include StanTec (STN.TO) down 3.73%, and gold (CGL.TO) down a whopping 7.59%.

The big change this month was the sale of all speculative stocks, gold and non-value stocks.  As I wrote earlier this month, I am getting back to fundamental value investing.

My bond holdings are at 34.1%, which is a little more than my target of 33.5%, but acceptable. I have 36.8% cash awaiting deployment into value stocks as prices become cheaper.
