I have been tracking the detailed performance of my portfolio for 60 months now. This gives me five full years of data to analyze. Here is the performance of my portfolio.

During the past year my portfolio has lost 5.38%. This is worse than the prior year, during which it gained 11.92%. A 5.38% loss is disappointing but better than the TSX (down 6.32% this year). The DOW (down 1.24%) and the TI Index (down 1.11%) are also down but better than my portfolio.

Looking at the five year timeframe, my portfolio has a total return of only 8.72%, or 1.69% per annum. This is good compared with the TSX (up 1.90% or 0.38% per annum), but poor compared to the DOW (up 41.51% or 7.19% per annum) and the TI Index (up 18.66% or 3.48% per annum).

During the past year my portfolio has gained 11.92%.  This is better than the prior year, during which it gained 4.97%. An 11.92% gain is great and also much better than comparative indexes: the TSX (up 2.81% this year), the DOW (up 7.74%) and the TI Index (up 5.59%).

Looking at the four year timeframe, my portfolio has gained only 14.91%. This is good compared with the TSX (up 8.78%), but poor compared to the DOW (up 43.29%) and the TI Index (up 19.99%).

Annual Update

I have been tracking the detailed performance of my portfolio for 44 months now. This gives me almost four full years of data to analyze. Here is the performance of my portfolio.  I have decided not to wait until the 48 months for complete this year’s annual update as I suspect its time to make some changes.

During the past year my portfolio has gained 8.52%. This is better than the TSX, which gained 7.15%.  If we assume however that the average TSX component has a yield of 2.5% then the overall returns for the TSX are over 9.5%.  The DOW gained 9.34% (perhaps 11% with dividends) and the TI Index gained 7.15% (perhaps 9% with dividends).  My portfolio has under performed all of these comparators.

Looking at the 44 month timeframe the portfolio has gained 10.39%.  The TSX has gained 6.61% in the same period (perhaps 15% with 44 months of dividends).  The TI Index and the DOW have done even better.

We are therefore forced to conclude that my investments selections are worse than these comparators at every timeframe.

Accordingly I will move my portfolio from individual stocks to indexes.

Looking at the three year timeframe, my portfolio has gained only 2.67%. This is poor compared with the TSX (up 5.81%), the DOW (up 32.99%) and the TI Index (up 13.63%).

I need to do better.  For the majority of the last year I was investing in an undisciplined manner.  I identified this and made several adjustments last month.  I believe that these adjustments will lead to improvements in the next year.
