Portfolio Update – Down 1.71% in July 2011

My portfolio balances at close of trading on 29th July were:

Ticker Price (C$) Price Change Percentage Industry
BHP $ 87.48 -4.11% 7.4% Materials
COS.TO $ 26.11 -6.18% 7.4% Energy
ERF.TO $ 29.79 -2.17% 6.9% Energy
GS $ 128.97 0.52% 5.3% Financials
INTC $ 21.34 -0.12% 6.9% Technology
MFC.TO $ 15.18 -11.12% 4.5% Financials
PHY-U.TO $ 13.42 n/a 6.8% Gold
SVU $ 8.22 -9.41% 5.0% Services
T.TO $ 52.59 -0.96% 0.0% Technology
TD.TO $ 76.49 -6.47% 6.5% Financials
IBM $ 173.77 5.07% 0.3% Technology
S&P Fund $ 101.10 -3.17% 22.2% US Equity Fund
Bond Fund $ 206.69 2.07% 20.2% Bond Fund
Cash 0.6% Cash
Total 100.0%

Overall my portfolio is down 5.15% since last month, despite additional cash contributions, but including cash withdrawals (the sale of IBM shares). Without these contributions and withdrawals the portfolio would be down 1.71%.

For comparison the index is down 0.66%, the DOW is down 2.18% and the TSX is down 2.67%.

Buying gold and selling Telus has helped. My gold fund is up 4.31% since I bought it while Telus shares are down 2.99%.

My bond component also helped with capital preservation: my bond fund is up 2.07% while the S&P fund is down 3.17%. Jumping more heavily into the S&P fund at the start of the week was premature as markets have continued to fall on US debt worries.

  • CAD$ = 1.0465 US$
